Most chimney problems don't start inside the firebox - they start at the top. A chase without a proper cap is basically an open invitation for rain, debris, birds, and anything else the Pacific Northwest wants to throw at it. Left unprotected long enough, that moisture works its way down and turns into a much bigger repair bill.

For this home in Battle Ground, we fabricated and installed a custom sheet metal chimney chase cap sized to fit this chase exactly. That's the key word here - custom. A cap that doesn't fit right leaves gaps, moves around, and eventually fails. When we build one from scratch, we control the fit, the seam placement, and the overlap over the chase walls. There's no guessing involved.

The dark sheet metal cap sits tight across the top of the stone chase, with clean folded edges that overhang the masonry on all four sides. That overhang is what keeps water from running down the face of the stone and working into the mortar joints. Paired with the flue cover centered on top, this setup handles rain, keeps animals out, and keeps debris from collecting inside the flue.

Stone chases like this one are an investment in a home. Good-looking stonework deserves protection that matches the quality of the build below it. A well-fitted cap doesn't just do a functional job - it looks right up there too. That matters, especially on a home with this kind of curb appeal.

Chimney cap installation and chimney cap replacement are jobs where the details really do matter. The right materials, a proper fit, and clean sheet metal work add up to something that holds up for years without causing headaches down the road.
